An award made of mycelium

The Design S 2023 awards are made of Reishi mushroom mycelium and residual woodchips. Mycelium is the root system of fungi; it can break down a wide range of substrates and recombine them to change their initial properties. To celebrate 40^th anniversary of the award and the introduction of this year’s new category, Design for Systemic Transformation, the team at RISE choose to highlight the community of Umeå and the potential of circularity, showing how excess materials can be transformed into objects of design value.

With an original design by Doberman, each unique award was made by Raffaele Errichiello, architect and researcher currently teaching at Umeå School of Architecture, in collaboration with Ellinor Werner, project leader at RISE.
