Nominees 2023: Furniture

Gemla Open
(Samuel Wilkinson / Gemla)

The inspiration comes from Gemla’s history as the Nordic region’s largest producer of wooden tennis rackets. This combined with more than 100 years of experience bending solid wood with steam. Solid steam-bent wood is in itself one of the most material-saving techniques imaginable. Little spillage and an enormously strong and resilient component. Gemla Open is made from a 3-meter-long rod in ash, shaped by hand into a whole back.

Max
(Johan Ansander / Blå Station)

Max is the dressed-up version of Maximus, Johan Ansander’s playful and iconic easy chair presented in 2021. Where Maximus was softly shaped in massive wood, Max offers soft comfort fully clothed with a springy lushness. The craftsmanship expressed in the precise seams endows Max with a distinct character and a mimetic attitude that will let any space look alive.

Viaduct
(Anki Gneib / Nola)

The Viaduct bench, designed by Anki Gneib, takes its inspiration from Roman aqueducts and viaducts. The bench consists of sections that together build up a strong architectural presence, with their characteristic arches. It has a strong visual yet tranquil expression. The wooden bench is made in cross-laminated timber, using only residual products from the building industry (waste material from CLT-panels for cutting out windows and doors).
